Australia today became the first non Asian country to be recommended as a tourist destination by the Peoples Republic of China. The total number of tourists from China is expected to reach 500,000 by the year 2006. Chinese tourists will, however, be required to post a bond of $10,000 dollars to ensure their return to the mainland. Tourists failing to return to China will forfeit their bond. Although Australia has an excellent record in housing refugees, tourists overstaying their visa can expect to be deported with little ceremony.

$150 Million Dollar Tourism Drive

In an effort to attract an additional 1 million tourists a year to Australia, the Federal Government today launched a $150 Million dollar campaign. The bulk of this money is being spent in Canada and the United States. There is some disquiet about the nature of the campaign, and the image of Australians it seeks to promote overseas.

The Festival of Sydney & the Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras

The annual Festival of Sydney was launched today and will continue until the end of January.

In February the Gay and Lesbian Festival begins. The highlight of the festival is the Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras that is held on the last Saturday evening of the month.

$10 Million Dollar Upgrade to Facilities on Goat Island

New Tourist Attraction
The NSW Government announced today that it will spend 10 million dollars to improve public access to Goat Island, which is visited annually by over 10,000 tourists. Bookings for trips to the island can be made at Cadman's Cottage in the Rocks.

Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

Starting in October, 1998 small groups can take a 3 hour tour of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, which culminates in a walk over the main arch. The views from the top of the bridge are unique and stunning.
